Title: OPH115 Surgical Assisting
Course Description:
This award-winning course is designed and taught by both an experienced ophthalmic surgical technician and an ophthlamic surgeon and introduces the student to the art and science of ophthalmic surgery. This course is a self-paced, step-by-step approach to surgical methodology, covering the advanced techniques of assisting in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative treatment of the ophthalmic surgical patient. It is a must for the staff of any surgical center, hospital, or clinic, that is involved in ophthalmic surgery for its patients. If the student is interested in getting certified as an Ophthalmic Surgical Tech, this course is a great place to start.
Emphasis will be placed on the proper methods of preparation for entry into the surgical environment, including the wearing of scrub outfits, head coverings, shoe coverings and surgical mask. The techniques of proper surgical scrubbing will be described in detail. The student will learn how to gown and glove themselves and then gown and glove the surgeon and set up the surgical suite for the procedure to be performed. The techniques of proper instrument handling and selection, setting up the trays, back table and positioning of the microscope and special instrumentation are illustrated with easy to watch video instruction. The role of the circulator, nurse anesthetist or anesthesiologist, and ancillary personnel are described. The surgical assistant will be introduced to the proper care of specialized instruments and maintaining surgical decorum during the procedure. Exposure to various types of ophthalmic surgical procedures will be presented.

As a result of taking this course the student will be able to:
Discuss the preoperative preparation of the patient including the informed consent
Explain the importance of aseptic technique and universal precautions
Outline the proper techniques of dressing, scrubbing, gowning, and gloving
Identify and explain the differences in surgical instruments
Prepare the back table, surgical Mayo stand, microscope and special equipment
Describe proper intraoperative monitoring and the role of the anesthetist
State the methods for instrument identification, selection, maintenance, and sterilization
Identify the materials required for preparation for surgery
Analyze and apply the various methods of sterilization including, liquid, cold, heat, pressure and gas methodologies
Apply surgical principles to explain the function of various equipment, supplies and instruments
Demonstrate knowledge of the different types of anesthesia, topical, local, regional, and general
Describe the various ophthalmic pharmacologic agents used in the pre, intra, and postoperative patient
Explain the differences between cataract, corneal, glaucoma, strabismus, oculoplastics, orbital, lacrimal, refractive, retinal, and laser surgery
Recognize, describe, predict and analyze proper psychology to facilitate understanding, providing instructions and guidance for the patient
Understand how to assist the surgeon with potential complications
Demonstrate proper professional and ethical responsibility
Communicate effectively with patients, families, doctors and staff
Appropriately apply laws, codes, regulations, and best practice standards to protect the health and safety of the patient, doctor and staff
Write clear and concise records of the procedure
Retrieve, analyze and interpret professional literature, manuals and applications
Guide, mentor, and support peers in achieving excellence in surgical assisting
